F. columnare is a yellow-pigmented filamentous Gram-negative bacterium and the causative agent of Columnaris disease, one of the most important bacterial diseases of freshwater fish. Columnaris disease is characterized as an acute to chronic infection of the gills, oropharynx, and skin with a high level of mortality (50 - 90%) in salmonid and non-salmonid species.
